I don't know how many of you have played the amazing community-made mods for Doki Doki Literature Club!, but I'd like to talk about what is, in my opinion, the very best one: Doki Doki Exit Music Redux. Don't worry—this review is completely spoiler-free. To begin with, Exit Music Redux is a complete remake of the original Doki Doki Exit Music. The soundtrack is made up mostly of abstract Radiohead covers, and it creates an atmosphere that is both haunting and beautiful. From the very first moments, the mood feels unique and incredibly well crafted. What truly sets this mod apart from so many others, however, is its writing. It is simply outstanding. You genuinely grow attached to the characters, and the story manages to make you feel an incredible range of emotions. It is undeniably a tragic story, but it never relies on cheap drama to make you care. The plot is coherent from beginning to end. I never noticed any major plot holes or inconsistencies, and every character feels believable. In my opinion, they all remain faithful to the personalities established in the original game while being given much more depth. There are also countless tiny details that make the story feel surprisingly realistic, almost never breaking the immersion. The story mainly focuses on Natsuki and the protagonist, exploring a relationship that is as touching as it is unhealthy. It's a heartbreaking tale, and I have no problem admitting that this mod made me cry. Judging by the community's reaction, I'm far from being the only one. There's something about this story that is difficult to explain. Something that stays with you long after you've finished it. I've seen many players describe the exact same feeling, and I think that's what makes this mod so special. I genuinely can't recommend it enough. Just be warned: this is an emotionally heavy experience. If you're particularly sensitive to tragic stories, you may want to think twice before playing it. For everyone else, I believe it's one of the finest stories the DDLC modding community has ever created.
