Well hello there, Your Royal Hostness of the Holly Jolly! You’ve decided to throw an ugly sweater party, and honestly, that’s the best decision anyone has made all week. An ugly sweater party is the easiest holiday party to throw, because the guests bring the decorations: they’re wearing them. Send the invitations early, set out good snacks, and add a few ugly sweater party supplies and a short contest, and the night more or less runs itself.

Short answer: To throw an ugly sweater party, send invitations three to six weeks ahead (November 6 to 27 for a December 18 party), put the dress code and contest rules in them, plan 8 to 11 appetizer pieces per guest for three hours, keep a spare-sweater bin by the door, and finish with a short contest.

When should you send ugly sweater party invitations in 2026?

Send ugly sweater party invitations three to six weeks before the party, so for a party on Friday, December 18, 2026, invitations go out between November 6 and November 27. Greenvelope’s ugly sweater party planning tips (updated November 1, 2026) say it plainly: Send invites three to six weeks in advance and set an RSVP deadline. December 18 is a natural date to pick, because it’s National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day, which National Today lists as the third Friday of December.

Timeline of an ugly Christmas sweater party countdown for Friday, December 18, 2026: send invitations November 6 to 27, plan food and games November 20, order sweaters, lights and supplies November 30, RSVP deadline December 11, shop fresh food and test light-up battery packs December 16, and the party on National Ugly Sweater Day.
Our countdown for a December 18 party. The invite window is Greenvelope’s; the other dates are our suggestions, typed out below.

The rest of the ugly sweater party countdown, as plain text: about four weeks out (November 20 for a December 18 party), plan the food, games and contest awards; around November 30, order sweaters, string lights and supplies, so there’s time for a size swap; on December 11, close the RSVPs and buy drinks and paper goods; on December 16 or 17, shop for fresh food and test every light-up sweater’s battery pack; then party on December 18. Those dates are our suggestions, not a rule.

What should an ugly sweater party invitation say?

An ugly sweater party invitation should say the date, time, place, the dress code, whether there’s a contest or a gift swap, and the RSVP date. Funny wording helps, but the dress code line is the one that matters most, because it’s the line people act on. You can send it digitally or print ugly sweater party invitations to hand out.

Shutterfly’s ugly sweater party guide has a nice example that fits all of that on a postcard: Eat, Drink & Be Ugly, followed by the date, the address and Prizes For the Best/Worst Sweaters (Shutterfly, last updated October 15, 2025). Here’s wording we wrote for four different crowds. Copy it, change the details, and you’re done:

How much food and drink do you need for an ugly sweater party?

For a three-hour ugly sweater party with appetizers instead of dinner, plan 8 to 11 appetizer pieces, 3 to 4.5 soft drinks or waters, 1 to 1.5 pounds of ice, 2 cups, 1.5 plates and 3 to 4 napkins for each guest. Those per-guest numbers come from two published catering guides, and the table below multiplies them out for you.

Here’s where each number comes from. The Princeton Alumni Class Event Catering & Drink Guide (June 2026) suggests 6 to 8 appetizer pieces per person for a 2- to 3-hour reception with no meal and 8 to 10 for 3 to 4 hours, 1 to 1.5 non-alcoholic drinks per person per hour with at least half of them water, 1 alcoholic drink per drinking guest per hour with 70 to 75% of guests drinking, and 1 to 1.5 pounds of ice per person. What’s Cooking America says guests at a cocktail party eat about 5 appetizers each in the first hour and about 3 each hour after, which is 11 for three hours. It also suggests about 3 kinds of appetizers for 8 to 10 guests, roughly 6 for under 45 guests and about 8 for more. Our alcohol column assumes 3 in 4 guests drink. If you’re serving a full dinner, cut the appetizers to about 6 per guest, the dinner-party figure What’s Cooking America gives.

The Princeton guide ends with a hosting rule worth taping to the fridge: When in doubt, add: 1. Water 2. Vegetarian food 3. Ice, because those run out first.

What food do you serve at an ugly sweater party?

The best ugly sweater party food is finger food people can eat standing up, with one or two “sweater” treats for the photos. A good menu for an ugly sweater party:

  • Ugly sweater sugar cookies. Cut them with an ugly sweater cookie cutter and let guests decorate their own with icing and sprinkles. It’s food and a game at once.
  • A hot cocoa bar. Cocoa, marshmallows, crushed candy canes and whipped cream, set out with hot cocoa bar supplies. Kids and non-drinkers love it.
  • A “sweater pattern” cheese and veggie board. Lay crackers, cheese cubes and cherry tomatoes in stripes and zigzags, like a knit pattern.
  • Hearty bites. The Princeton guide favors hearty items such as mini sandwiches, flatbreads and skewers over delicate passed bites, and says to label the vegetarian options, because they go fast.
  • A slow cooker of meatballs or dip. It keeps hot food hot without you babysitting the oven.

How do you keep ugly sweater party food safe on the buffet?

Keep ugly sweater party food safe by putting out small platters, swapping them for fresh ones during the party, and throwing away perishable food that has sat out for more than 2 hours. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Serving Up Safe Buffets page explains the swap:

Don’t add new food to an already filled serving dish. Instead, replace nearly empty serving dishes with freshly filled ones.

What drinks work at an ugly sweater party?

The drinks that work best at an ugly sweater party are one festive signature drink plus plenty of water and non-alcoholic choices. Give the signature drink a tacky name, like a Tinsel Fizz or a Rudolph Punch, and serve it in a big dispenser so nobody plays bartender all night. Make a non-alcoholic version of it too, so drivers and kids get the fun one as well. The Princeton guide suggests that at least half the non-alcoholic drinks be water, still or sparkling.

What games do you play at an ugly sweater party?

The classic ugly sweater party games are a sweater contest with a runway walk, holiday trivia, Christmas movie bingo, a gift swap and a photo booth. Shutterfly’s game list covers an Ugliest Sweater Contest, a Runway Show, a Photo Booth Challenge, Holiday Trivia, Christmas Movie Bingo, a DIY Sweater Station, and Secret Santa or White Elephant.

  • The ugly sweater contest. The main event. Use three to five awards and judges who aren’t competing; our guide to ugly sweater contest categories, rules and prizes has the most common awards, a 100-point judging sheet and free ballots.
  • The runway walk. Everybody struts their sweater to a song. It’s where the contest gets loud.
  • Christmas movie bingo. Shutterfly’s idea: Create bingo cards featuring scenes, quotes, or characters from favorite holiday movies, or grab a Christmas movie bingo game.
  • Carol charades. Paperless Post suggests games From Christmas carol charades to pin the nose on the reindeer (Paperless Post, November 2, 2025).
  • A gift swap. White elephant, with an ugly-sweater twist: every gift has to be wrapped in the tackiest paper you can find.
  • The photo spot. A backdrop and ugly sweater photo booth props. Take a group photo before anyone leaves.

How do you decorate for an ugly sweater party?

Decorate for an ugly sweater party with the same over-the-top spirit as the sweaters: string lights, tinsel, loud colors and one great photo spot. You don’t need much, because the guests are the decoration. Five things do most of the work:

What if a guest doesn’t have an ugly sweater?

If a guest doesn’t have an ugly sweater, hand them one from a spare-sweater bin by the door, or send them to a decorating table to make one on the spot. Nobody should feel left out of an ugly sweater party for not owning one.

  • The spare-sweater bin. Fill it with a few thrifted sweaters in big sizes, plus Santa hats and reindeer antlers, so anyone can join in.
  • The DIY sweater station. Greenvelope suggests a party where everyone designs their own ugly sweater and wears their creation the rest of the night. Put out iron-on Christmas patches, pom-poms, tinsel and safety pins. Safety pins and removable patches mean the sweater survives the night.
  • Loosen the dress code. Say in the invitation that vests, cardigans, sweatshirts and holiday tees count. It helps anyone who runs hot or lives somewhere warm, where an ugly Christmas T-shirt makes more sense than a wool sweater.

What should guests wear and bring to an ugly sweater party?

Guests should wear the tackiest holiday sweater they can find and bring whatever the invitation asks for, usually a dish, a gift for the swap, or nothing at all. A thin layer under the sweater helps, because a heavy knit in a warm, crowded room gets hot fast. If the party has a gift swap, bring a wrapped gift within the price limit the host sets. A small host gift, like cookies or a candle, is always welcome. And if the sweater lights up, bring spare batteries for the battery pack, or charge it first. Sweaters with lights are popular for good reason: browse light-up ugly Christmas sweaters if you want to be seen from across the room.

Here’s a little secret we love about these parties: the tackier the room gets, the more relaxed everybody feels. Nobody worries about looking perfect when there’s a light-up reindeer blinking across the snack table.

How do you throw an ugly sweater party for kids?

Throw an ugly sweater party for kids by keeping it short, around 90 minutes is our suggestion, and making the activities hands-on: decorating paper sweaters or cookies, a sweater parade, and prizes for everyone. Kids care less about the contest and more about making something. For a classroom, Marissa Will’s guide for Arizona PBS (December 2023) has students design paper sweaters from templates, vote, and then display them all, so no family has to buy a sweater.

  • A sweater-decorating table with paper sweater cut-outs, stickers and crayons.
  • Cookie decorating, using the same ugly sweater cookie cutter as the grown-up party.
  • A sweater parade instead of a judged contest, with a silly award for every child.
  • The kids’ ballot from our contest guide uses four kid-friendly awards: Funniest, Most Creative, Most Festive and Best Homemade.

How do you host an ugly sweater party at the office?

Host an ugly sweater party at the office by keeping it optional, keeping it short, and putting the dress code in the invitation, so nobody is surprised. A lunch on National Ugly Sweater Day, Friday, December 18, 2026, is an easy fit. In a 2023 article for the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), David Lewis of OperationsInc advised management to communicate expectations to employees in advance. For an ugly sweater lunch, that means:

  • Make the sweater optional and the contest optional.
  • Welcome every winter holiday, not only Christmas, and say so.
  • Keep humor office-safe: judge the sweater, never the person.
  • Use our free office contest ballot with six HR-friendly awards.

How do you host a virtual ugly sweater party?

Host a virtual ugly sweater party by collecting a photo of each sweater before the call, showing them as a slideshow, and voting with a poll. Number the photos so the vote is quick. Zoom and Microsoft Teams both have built-in meeting polls, and a Google Form works for anyone; our contest guide compares the three. Give the call a warm-up game, like holiday trivia, and ask everyone to bring a festive drink. A 45-minute call is plenty, which is our suggestion, not a rule.

How do you throw an ugly sweater party on a budget?

You throw an ugly sweater party on a budget by making it a potluck, using thrifted sweaters, decorating with what you already own, and printing free ballots instead of buying them. The sweaters are the whole show, so the room can stay simple.

  • Ask each guest to bring one appetizer, and use our quantity table to see how many guests’ worth you still need.
  • Make the trophy from a thrift-store find and a spray of gold paint.
  • Swap paper invitations for a free digital invite or a group message.
  • Print our free ballots, judge sheet and certificate from the contest guide.
  • Use holiday paper plates and napkins so clean-up takes minutes.

Where can you get a free printable ugly sweater party checklist?

You can print our free ugly sweater party checklist right here, with no signup: the Ugly Sweater Party Host Checklist opens in your browser, ready to print on US Letter paper. It runs from six weeks out to the morning after, with tick boxes for invitations, food, games, supplies, safety and clean-up.

It lists every step in plain text too:

  1. 6 to 3 weeks before: pick the date, time and place; make the guest list; send invitations with the dress code and an RSVP date; choose 3 to 5 contest awards.
  2. 2 to 3 weeks before: plan the menu (8 to 11 appetizer pieces per guest for 3 hours); plan the games; order sweaters, lights, decorations and prizes; fill a spare-sweater bin and set up a DIY table.
  3. 1 week before: close the RSVPs; buy drinks, cups (2 per guest), plates and napkins; print ballots, the judge sheet and certificates; make a playlist and a photo spot.
  4. The day before and the day of: buy ice (1 to 1.5 pounds per guest) and fresh food; test light-up sweaters and close every battery pack; set out small platters and swap them; toss perishables after 2 hours; run the contest and take a group photo.
  5. After the party: put leftovers away within 2 hours of serving; take the batteries out of light-up sweaters before washing or storing them; send thank-yous and the group photo.

Questions and answers

What do you do at an ugly sweater party?

Guests wear the tackiest holiday sweater they can find, then eat, drink and play games. Most parties end with an ugly sweater contest and a runway walk, plus holiday trivia, Christmas movie bingo or a white elephant gift swap. A photo spot and a DIY sweater table keep everyone involved.

What food do you serve at an ugly sweater party?

Finger food that people can eat standing up works best: sliders, skewers, meatballs, a cheese board and dips, plus decorated ugly sweater sugar cookies and a hot cocoa bar. For a three-hour party without dinner, plan about 8 to 11 appetizer pieces per guest. Put out small platters and replace them rather than topping them up.

When should you send ugly sweater party invitations?

Send them three to six weeks before the party and set an RSVP deadline, as Greenvelope recommends. For a party on Friday, December 18, 2026, that means between November 6 and November 27. Asking for RSVPs a week before gives you a firm headcount for food.

What do you wear to an ugly sweater party if you don’t have a sweater?

Decorate a plain sweater, sweatshirt or holiday T-shirt with iron-on patches, tinsel and pom-poms held on with safety pins, or borrow one from the host’s spare-sweater bin. Many hosts say vests, cardigans and holiday tees count. A Santa hat or reindeer antlers also help in a pinch.

When is National Ugly Sweater Day 2026?

National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day 2026 is Friday, December 18. It falls on the third Friday of December every year, according to National Today. It’s a popular date for office and school ugly sweater parties, so send invitations by November 27.

How this was written: Based on Greenvelope’s ugly sweater party planning tips (updated November 1, 2026) for invitation timing; Shutterfly’s and Paperless Post’s party guides for games and invitation wording; the Princeton Alumni Class Event Catering & Drink Guide (June 2026) and What’s Cooking America for per-guest food, drink and supply amounts; the FDA’s Serving Up Safe Buffets page for food safety; National Today for the date of National Ugly Sweater Day; Arizona PBS for classroom ideas; SHRM for office party expectations; and the National Capital Poison Center and the Epilepsy Society for light-up sweater safety, all checked November 6, 2026. The invitation windows, the quantity table, the invitation wording, the countdown dates and the printable checklist are our own work built from those sources. We haven’t hosted the parties described here, and the timings we suggest are suggestions, not rules.
