Wedding Cake Size Calculator: How Many Tiers Do You Need?
A cake for 100 guests usually needs three tiers of 12, 10 and 8 inches, which gives 118 standard wedding slices. A 2-tier cake of 10 and 8 inches serves about 62, and a 4-tier cake of 12, 10, 8 and 6 inches serves about 130.
How does the wedding cake size calculator work?
The calculator adds up tiers that sit one size apart, using the standard slice counts in the chart on this page, and shows the smallest stack for each number of tiers. Bakers cut differently, so treat the result as a starting point and confirm it with yours.

Questions people ask
How many tiers do you need for 150 guests?
For 150 wedding slices, three tiers of 14, 12 and 10 inches give 172 slices, and four tiers of 14, 12, 10 and 8 inches give 196. Four tiers look taller; three tiers cost less to decorate.
Does the top tier count as servings?
Only if you plan to serve it. Many couples save the top tier for their first anniversary, so leave it out of your count if you will do the same.
What if I want a tall cake for a small guest list?
Ask your baker about a stack with foam dummy tiers: the bottom tiers are decorated foam, so the cake looks grand and you pay for less cake. Prices vary, so ask for a quote both ways.
