I feel like Basil from OMORI is really overhated, he's like my second favorite character after Mari. So randomly I want to see what people hate about him and see if I can refute those claims. That being said, I'm not gonna force you to change your views on this character, you can understand the character and STILL hate them.
Reason 1: He staged Mari's suicide This is the most obvious reason people hate Basil but here's the thing, he was around 13 years old and he just saw his best friend kill his older sister, who by the way, was also a close friend of Basil's. Mari's body fell right in front of him. The only thing Basil could think about at the moment was the fact Sunny would be taken away from him as well, so he did the first thing that came to his mind to protect, of course this thing wasn't really a good idea but
it would keep Sunny from going to jail according to him. A question I have is, how the HELL did he think of this? I mean, this is a 13 year old, how could he think this up? (in the sense, what on earth did bro go through?)
Reason 2: The Shears Incident Soooo, he nearly kills himself here. If you choose not to check on Basil, Basil kills himself here, which should already tell us what state of mind he was in here. The reason he kills himself, i THINK btw, is because Sunny is leaving him, he's moving out of town and also because of how alone he is. Kel tried to reach out, but Basil needed Sunny to be there for him because of the shared trauma/secret the two of them had. The guilt over Mari's death manifests as "Something", a monster only Sunny and
Basil see. Even then, they see different somethings. Basil stabs Sunny because he believes he is saving Sunny from Something behind him, the same way he saw Something push Mari. He's only 16 when this happens, and I don't hate him because all of this is just a really unfortunate accident that was preceded by wrong actions.
Reason 3: The 4 years after Okay so this isn't really a reason people hate him, I feel the need to give a bit of context here. After Sunny ruins the photo album, it's Basil who ultimately takes the fall for it, being severely bullied by Aubrey, one of his close friends. He kept the secret for 4 years, to protect Sunny despite being ghosted by him. Right after the stairs incident, Sunny and Basil promise to always be there for each other, only for Sunny to ghost him for 4 years. Not that I'm blaming Sunny here, like I
said, they're only tragic victims of circumstance.
Reason 4: Destroying the friend group Mari's "suicide" splits the group terribly, but despite the initial lie, the actual split itself is not entirely Basil's fault. I mean he was the trigger though, Sunny locks himself and disassociates for 4 years, Aubrey takes her grief out in the form of anger on Basil, Hero becomes unresponsive for months before being confronted by Kel and channeling his toxic perfectionism, and I think poor Kel got the shortest end of the stick. In order to be the peacemaker and bring everyone together, he keeps on a happy facade to hide his sadness,
by doing this, he accidentally neglects the feelings of his friends. Destroying the group happened because of Sunny and Basil, but it was a group effort that it happened.
Its sad how Basil takes the blame for Sunny's actions in both the game and the fandom. I really hope this could help some people understand the complexity of his character. If you still hate him, well that's fine, I appreciate it if you could acknowledge the things he's gone through though. I'm going to add a bit more so just bear with me a little while more:
Earlier I mentioned how did Basil think of... well, that? Basil was an abandoned kid. His parents left him to live with his grandmother and nanny. His grandmother actually dies in the game, which is one of the things leading up to his suicide. His only real family was his friend group, that was being held together by Mari, and then Mari died. All he could think at the moment was likely that they might hate Sunny or Sunny might go to jail. Even if the truth came out, I think the group would have still separated because they would
not know how to handle the truth, in fact I think, Sunny would've had to deal with much more than he did if Basil didn't "help" him. The reason Basil insists that Something behind Sunny pushed Mari is because he couldn't stomach the fact it was Sunny, he'd rather believe something else, like Something or even suicide.
At the end of the day Basil's character is very complex and difficult to understand at first. He did a very wrong thing but I personally can't hate him for it after seeing what he went through because I'm maybe a bit biased and see myself in him. (dependency on friends instead of family, i mean) but i also understand that to some people nothing could excuse Basil's behavior, this post is just meant to help people understand his character more ^-^.Please don't take any offense by this

I Miss You
Twin automatic "I Miss You" campaigns — entirely server-side once ON; no admin/UI engagement is needed for them to actually fire at the scheduled times below. Same message every user already gets from the manual button, just with no links/URLs in it, sent about 10 seconds apart (jittered ±1-3s) to everyone with an email on file.
