Hello there, pocket-sized-powerhouse pilot — good news first: your little Xbox is invited to Leonida too! GTA 6 is coming to the Xbox Series S on , the same day as the Series X and the PS5: Rockstar Games lists the game for Xbox Series X|S, and the Xbox Store marks it Optimized for Xbox Series X|S. The squeeze is storage. The preload is up to 212 GB, and the white 512 GB Series S has only about 364 GB free for games, so a storage expansion card for Xbox Series X|S (see options on Amazon) is the easy way to keep your other games installed too.
Short answer: Yes. GTA 6 launches on Xbox Series S on November 19, 2026 — Rockstar lists it for Xbox Series X|S. The preload is up to 212 GB, about 58% of the 512 GB Series S’s roughly 364 GB of usable space. Rockstar hasn’t published resolution or frame-rate figures for the Series S, or any console, yet.
The picture, as text: on the 512 GB Series S, about 148 GB goes to the system and reserved space, GTA 6 takes up to 212 GB and about 152 GB is left for everything else. On the 1 TB Series S, about 200 GB is reserved, GTA 6 takes up to 212 GB and about 588 GB is left. Both bars assume an otherwise empty drive.
Is GTA 6 coming to Xbox Series S?
Yes. GTA 6 is coming to the Xbox Series S: Rockstar Games’ official GTA VI page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with the game coming November 19, 2026. The Xbox Store listing for Grand Theft Auto VI carries the Optimized for Xbox Series X|S badge, and the one Xbox version plays on both the Series S and the Series X.
Xbox One isn’t on Rockstar’s list, so on Xbox, GTA 6 needs a Series S or a Series X. The Xbox preload of GTA 6 starts at one worldwide moment — 12 am GMT on November 10, which is 7 pm Eastern on November 9 — as Video Games Chronicle reported from Rockstar’s announcement on November 3, 2026. Our guide to preloading GTA 6 on Xbox and PS5 has the steps.
Will GTA 6 fit on an Xbox Series S?
Yes, GTA 6 fits on every Xbox Series S, but on the 512 GB model it takes more than half of the space you can actually use. Rockstar puts the preload at up to 212 GB, depending on the device
, and the white 512 GB Series S leaves about 364 GB for games. The 1 TB Series S, sold in Carbon Black and Robot White, leaves about 800 GB, according to KitGuru’s report when the 1 TB model launched in September 2023.
| Console | Drive | Usable for games | Left after GTA 6 | GTA 6 share |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series S (Robot White) | 512 GB | about 364 GB | about 152 GB | 58% |
| Xbox Series S (Carbon Black or Robot White) | 1 TB | about 800 GB | about 588 GB | 27% |
| Xbox Series X | 1 TB | about 802 GB | about 590 GB | 26% |
Every game you already have installed comes out of that leftover space, and a launch-day patch can add more on top of the 212 GB. For the PlayStation numbers too, see how much room GTA 6 needs on every PS5 and Xbox.
Will the GTA 6 download be smaller on a Series S?
The GTA 6 download might be smaller on a Series S, but Rockstar hasn’t given a separate Series S size, so plan for the full 212 GB. Microsoft has said since the console’s reveal that Series S versions can leave out the biggest 4K texture files: Xbox’s Jason Ronald told IGN in 2020 that Series S installs should be about 30% smaller on average, as Video Games Chronicle reported.
Our expectation is that developers will not ship their highest level mipmaps to Xbox Series S.
That was a general expectation for all Series S games, not a GTA 6 number. Until the real GTA 6 download shows up in your Series S queue on November 10, the safe figure is 212 GB.
How do you add storage to an Xbox Series S for GTA 6?
The only add-on storage an Xbox Series S can play GTA 6 from is a Storage Expansion Card, which plugs into the expansion slot on the back of the console. Xbox Wire says the card is designed to match the exact performance of the internal storage
of the Xbox Series X|S, so GTA 6 runs from it just as it does from the built-in SSD. The Series S has one expansion slot.
Which storage expansion cards work with an Xbox Series S?
Seagate makes the official Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S, and Western Digital makes the WD_BLACK C50, a certified card for the same slot. Both fit the Series S and the Series X, and every size holds GTA 6’s 212 GB.
| Card | Sizes | Plays GTA 6? |
|---|---|---|
| Seagate Storage Expansion Card | 512 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB, 4 TB | Yes, every size |
| WD_BLACK C50 Expansion Card | 512 GB, 1 TB | Yes, both sizes |
On a 512 GB Series S, a 1 TB card adds about a terabyte of play-ready space (a little less once formatted) — more than the whole internal drive. Browse Seagate Storage Expansion Cards on Amazon or WD_BLACK C50 cards on Amazon.
Can you play GTA 6 from a USB drive on Xbox Series S?
No. GTA 6 is optimized for Xbox Series X|S, and Seagate’s support page says games optimized for Series X|S consoles can’t be played from USB drives — they will need to be moved back to the internal drive or Seagate Storage Expansion Card for game play.
Honestly, the Series S is a bit like a cozy studio apartment: perfectly comfy, as long as you’re picky about what moves in.
A USB drive is still useful on a Series S. It can hold Series X|S games you aren’t playing right now, so you can move them off the internal SSD to make room for GTA 6 and move them back later instead of downloading them again, and it can play older Xbox One games directly. Seagate lists the requirements: 128 GB or larger, connected with USB 3.0 or later. A USB 3.0 external drive for parking games is the budget half of a Series S storage plan.
The picture, as text: the internal SSD plays GTA 6 (about 364 GB usable on the 512 GB model, about 800 GB on the 1 TB model); a Storage Expansion Card plays GTA 6 at the same speed as the internal SSD (Seagate 512 GB to 4 TB, WD_BLACK C50 512 GB or 1 TB, one slot on the back); a USB drive (USB 3.0 or later, 128 GB or larger) stores GTA 6 but can’t play it — move it back to the SSD or the card to play. USB drives are fine for Xbox One games.
How will GTA 6 run on Xbox Series S?
Nobody outside Rockstar knows yet: as of November 5, 2026, Rockstar hasn’t published resolution or frame-rate figures for GTA 6 on the Series S, the Series X or the PS5. What’s official is the hardware. Microsoft’s Xbox Series S page lists these specs:
- Gaming resolution
- 1440p
- Performance target
- up to 120 FPS (what the console can do, not a GTA 6 figure)
- Graphics
- 4 teraflops, 20 compute units at 1.565 GHz, custom RDNA 2 GPU
- Processor
- 8 cores at 3.8 GHz (3.6 GHz with SMT), custom Zen 2 CPU
- Memory
- 10 GB GDDR6
- Storage
- 512 GB or 1 TB custom NVMe SSD
- Disc drive
- none — the Series S is all-digital
The closest thing to a GTA 6 frame-rate answer is a report. Video Games Chronicle reported on August 28, 2026 — citing Kotaku and a YouTube video by Brazilian creator Davy Jones, who visited Rockstar North before the Extended Look — that Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson said the consoles are running the game at 30 frames per second
during the current stage of development. The quote is a machine translation, Nelson reportedly had no details on resolution, and whether a 60 FPS option comes at launch or later was left to the technical team. It wasn’t about the Series S in particular, and it isn’t a final spec.
Take-Two has sounded calm about the smaller Xbox. Asked about the Series S on Take-Two’s November 2024 earnings call, CEO Strauss Zelnick said we support the platforms where the consumers are for as long as they’re there
and I’m not really worried
, as VGC reported on November 8, 2024. Anything more exact you see on social media — a precise Series S resolution, say — is a rumor until Rockstar publishes it.
Can you play GTA 6 on a Series S with a boxed copy?
Yes. The Xbox Series S has no disc drive — Xbox says disc-based games aren’t compatible with it — but boxed copies of GTA 6 are code-in-box: the box holds a download code, not the game on a disc. Redeem the code on the Microsoft Store and the Series S downloads GTA 6 just like the digital version, so you need the same up-to-212 GB of space. Rockstar says code-in-box versions should reach retailers from November 12, 2026.
Do you need a new console for GTA 6 if you have a Series S?
No — the Xbox Series S plays GTA 6, because Rockstar lists the game for Xbox Series X|S. The Series S’s real limit for GTA 6 is storage, and an expansion card or a tidy-up fixes that. Whether a Series X or a PS5 Pro is worth it for sharper or smoother play is a question to answer after November 19, once GTA 6’s actual performance on each console is known. Until then, more storage or a spare Xbox Wireless Controller is the cheaper way to get ready for Leonida — and our GTA 6 release times in every time zone tell you exactly when to be on the couch.
Make the room, charge that controller, and give your trusty Series S the launch night it deserves.

How many GB is GTA 6 on Xbox Series S?
Rockstar says the preload is up to 212 GB, depending on the device, and hasn’t given a separate Series S figure. Plan for the full 212 GB — more than half of the 512 GB Series S’s roughly 364 GB of usable space.

Will GTA 6 be 30fps on Series S?
Rockstar hasn’t published frame rates for any console. Video Games Chronicle reported on August 28, 2026 that Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson said the consoles were running the game at 30 frames per second during development, with no decision yet on a 60 FPS option.
