Checklist time — welcome, Leonida setup scout! To play GTA 6 you need a PlayStation 5 or an Xbox Series X|S — any model, from the little Xbox Series S to the PS5 Pro — plus up to 212 GB of free space and an internet connection to download it. The PS4 and the Xbox One can’t run it. If you’re still choosing, PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles on Amazon and the Xbox Series S and X are all invited to Leonida on .

Short answer: GTA 6 runs on the PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X — not on PS4 or Xbox One. You also need up to 212 GB of free space and internet for the download. PlayStation Plus and Game Pass aren’t required, because both stores list GTA 6 as single-player, and any TV with HDMI works.

Diagram of which consoles can play GTA 6: green ticks for the PS5, the PS5 Pro (labelled PS5 Pro Enhanced), the Xbox Series S and the Xbox Series X, red crosses for the PS4, PS4 Pro and Xbox One, plus a checklist of what Grand Theft Auto VI needs (212 GB of free space, internet for the download, an HDMI TV, one controller) and what it doesn't (a PS Plus or Game Pass membership, a disc drive, a 4K or 120 Hz TV, a PS5 Pro).

The picture, as text: plays GTA 6 — PS5 (disc or digital, launch model or Slim), PS5 Pro (labelled “PS5 Pro Enhanced”), Xbox Series S (512 GB or 1 TB) and Xbox Series X (1 TB or 2 TB). Doesn’t play GTA 6 — PS4, PS4 Pro and every Xbox One. You also need up to 212 GB of free space, internet to download the game, any TV or monitor with HDMI and one controller. You don’t need PlayStation Plus or Game Pass to play, a disc drive, a 4K, HDR or 120 Hz TV, or a PS5 Pro.

Which consoles can play GTA 6?

GTA 6 plays on four consoles: the PlayStation 5, the PS5 Pro, the Xbox Series S and the Xbox Series X. Rockstar Games’ official GTA VI page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with the game coming November 19, 2026, and PlayStation’s own Grand Theft Auto VI page names the PS5 Pro too, with a “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label.

Last-generation consoles can’t run GTA 6. PlayStation’s FAQ says Grand Theft Auto VI will only be playable on PlayStation 5 consoles and that it won’t be available for PS4. On Xbox, the Xbox Store listing for Grand Theft Auto VI names only Xbox Series X|S as the console to play on, so the Xbox One is out as well. There’s no PC version at launch either — Rockstar hasn’t announced one, as our guide to GTA 6 release times in every time zone explains.

Does it matter which PS5 or Xbox Series model you have?

Every PS5 and Xbox Series model plays GTA 6: the launch PS5, the PS5 Slim, the PS5 Digital Edition with no disc drive, the PS5 Pro, the Xbox Series S and the Xbox Series X. There’s one PlayStation version and one Xbox version — the Xbox Store marks the Xbox version Optimized for Xbox Series X|S, for both consoles. What changes from model to model is how much free storage you have and how much graphics power the console has; the comparison table further down puts both side by side.

What do you need to play GTA 6?

Besides the console, GTA 6 needs free storage, an internet connection for the download and a screen with an HDMI input. Here’s the full GTA 6 requirements list, gathered from Rockstar’s, Sony’s and Microsoft’s own pages:

Console
PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series S or Xbox Series X
Free storage
up to 212 GB, Rockstar’s preload figure; PlayStation’s page asks PS5 owners to clear a minimum of 212GB of storage space
Internet
to download the game (boxed copies hold a download code) and its updates
Account
a PlayStation or Xbox account; the store fine print says certain features may also need a Rockstar Games account
Membership
none listed — PlayStation and Xbox both describe GTA 6 as single-player
Screen
any TV or monitor with HDMI; 4K, HDR and 120 Hz are extras, not requirements
Controller
the one that came with your console — on PS5, GTA 6 supports the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, per PlayStation’s GTA VI page
Disc drive
not needed — boxed copies of GTA 6 are code-in-box

Do you need a disc drive for GTA 6?

No. Rockstar’s preload announcement on its Newswire says the boxed versions of GTA 6 are code-in-box, in stores from November 12, 2026: the box holds a download code, not the game on a disc. So all-digital consoles — the PS5 Digital Edition, the Xbox Series S and the all-digital Robot White Xbox Series X — are just as ready for GTA 6 as disc models. Redeem the code, then download up to 212 GB like everyone else; our guide to preloading GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox has the steps.

How do the GTA 6 consoles compare?

For GTA 6, the consoles differ mainly in free space and in what they can output, and Rockstar hasn’t published per-console resolution or frame rates yet. This table puts each console’s official top output next to its usable storage and what’s left once GTA 6 is installed:

GTA 6 on every console — compiled by Open World Notes on November 5, 2026, from Rockstar’s GTA VI page and up-to-212 GB preload figure, the PlayStation and Xbox Store listings, Sony’s and Microsoft’s console pages, and usable space reported by GameSpot, TechSpot, TechRadar and KitGuru (an otherwise empty drive is assumed)

The top-output column is what each console can do, not a GTA 6 setting: as of November 5, 2026, Rockstar hasn’t said what resolution or frame rate GTA 6 runs at on any console. The last column assumes the full 212 GB on an empty drive, so every game you already have installed comes out of it — see how to make room for GTA 6’s 212 GB on PS5 and Xbox.

Do you need a PS5 Pro for GTA 6?

No. GTA 6 runs on every PS5, and the PS5 Pro is an optional upgrade: PlayStation lists the game for PS5 and labels it “PS5 Pro Enhanced”, but neither Sony nor Rockstar has said what the PS5 Pro enhancements for GTA 6 are.

Quick honesty moment: a shiny new console is very tempting, but the PS5 or Xbox already sitting under your TV is invited to Leonida too.

The label showed up on the PlayStation Store listing on June 24, 2026, as Notebookcheck reported — the same day as Sony’s PlayStation Blog post saying GTA 6 plays best on PS5, which talked up the DualSense, Tempest 3D AudioTech and the PS5’s SSD rather than the Pro. Sony’s PS5 Pro page explains the label in general: Pro-enhanced titles are games enhanced with the power of PS5 Pro for improved visuals and performance, and a footnote adds that PS5 Pro enhanced features will vary by game.

So GTA 6 on a PS5 Pro should look or run better than on a standard PS5 in some way, but nobody outside Rockstar knows yet whether that means a sharper image, a smoother frame rate or both. The closest thing to a frame-rate answer is a report: Video Games Chronicle reported on August 28, 2026 that Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson said the consoles were running the game at 30 frames per second during development — a machine-translated remark, with no final word on a 60 FPS option.

If you already own a PS5, that’s all GTA 6 needs. If you’re buying a console anyway and want the strongest PlayStation for Leonida, the PS5 Pro is the premium pick, with a 2 TB SSD (about 1.9 TB usable) and Sony’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling — browse PS5 Pro consoles on Amazon.

Is GTA 6 different on Xbox Series S and Series X?

There’s one Xbox version of GTA 6 for both consoles, Optimized for Xbox Series X|S; what differs is the hardware it runs on. Microsoft’s Xbox Series S page lists 1440p gaming resolution and a 4-teraflop GPU, while the Xbox Series X page lists True 4K, up to 120 FPS, up to 8K HDR and a 12-teraflop GPU.

Rockstar hasn’t published GTA 6 resolution or frame rates for either Xbox. On the Xbox Series S, the tighter limit for GTA 6 is storage: the 512 GB model has about 364 GB usable, so GTA 6 fills 58% of it. Our GTA 6 on Xbox Series S guide covers expansion cards, USB drives and what’s known about Series S performance.

Do you need internet, PlayStation Plus or Game Pass for GTA 6?

You need internet to download GTA 6, but not a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass membership to play it, because both store listings describe GTA 6 as a single-player game. PlayStation’s GTA VI FAQ answers the multiplayer question in one line:

Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.

- PlayStation’s Grand Theft Auto VI FAQ, checked November 5, 2026

The Xbox Store lists GTA 6’s capabilities as Single player and Optimized for Xbox Series X|S, with no online multiplayer. On consoles, online multiplayer is what the paid memberships add: Sony says online multiplayer is included with all PlayStation Plus memberships on its PlayStation Plus page, and Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass page lists online console multiplayer in Game Pass Essential, Premium and Ultimate. Neither GTA 6 listing asks for either.

What about GTA Online? Push Square reported on June 24, 2026 that there was no word on GTA Online at launch, and as of November 5, 2026 Rockstar hasn’t announced an online mode for GTA 6. If one arrives later, check the store listing again then — online console multiplayer is exactly what PlayStation Plus and Game Pass cover.

Can you play GTA 6 offline?

Yes, once GTA 6 is downloaded: PlayStation’s GTA VI page lists “Offline play enabled”. The PlayStation Store listing explains that you can play on the main PS5 linked to your account through the Console Sharing and Offline Play setting, and on other PS5 consoles when you log in with the same account. The fine print on both stores adds that certain game features, content, services, or functions may require internet connection, Rockstar Games account registration or other steps, and launch-day updates need internet too — so keep the console online around November 18-19.

What TV do you need for GTA 6?

Any TV or monitor with an HDMI input runs GTA 6; a 4K, HDR or 120 Hz screen is an upgrade, not a requirement. Sony’s support page on changing PS5 resolution says all PS5 consoles have 4K and HDR capabilities, and that the PS5 supports the HDMI 2.1 specification, and it also supports 4K 120Hz video output — with picture quality depending on your TV.

For 120 Hz on a PS5, Sony’s checklist asks three things: is the console plugged into an HDMI 2.1 port on the TV, are you using the cable that came with the PS5 or an Ultra High Speed cable rated for 4K 120 Hz, and does the TV support 4K 120 Hz? The same page covers VRR (variable refresh rate), which lets the refresh rate adjust in real time on TVs and games that support it. Whether GTA 6 itself goes beyond 30 or 60 frames per second is unknown until Rockstar says, so a 120 Hz TV isn’t something GTA 6 needs today.

PS5 Pro owners with an 8K TV: Sony says 8K output needs a screen that supports 8K at 60 Hz with Display Stream Compression, and the setting exists only on the CFI-7000 model group — the PS5 Pro. If you’re upgrading the screen anyway, the features that matter for any console are HDMI 2.1 ports, 4K at 120 Hz, VRR and strong HDR, which OLED and mini-LED TVs are known for — browse OLED TVs with HDMI 2.1 on Amazon.

Tick the boxes, clear the space, and save the big upgrade decisions for after you’ve seen Leonida with your own eyes.

Questions and answers

Can you play GTA 6 on PS4?

No. PlayStation’s own GTA VI FAQ says the game will only be playable on PlayStation 5 consoles and won’t be available for PS4. On PlayStation you need a PS5 or a PS5 Pro.

Do you need PS Plus to play GTA 6?

Not at launch, based on the store listings. PlayStation describes GTA 6 as a single-player experience with offline play enabled, and online multiplayer is what PlayStation Plus adds. You still need internet to download the game and its updates.

Is GTA 6 better on PS5 Pro?

PlayStation labels GTA 6 “PS5 Pro Enhanced”, so the Pro version should improve on the standard PS5 in some way, but as of November 5, 2026 neither Sony nor Rockstar has said how. Sony says Pro enhancements vary by game, and every PS5 plays GTA 6.

Will GTA 6 have GTA Online at launch?

Rockstar hasn’t announced an online mode for GTA 6’s November 19, 2026 launch, and PlayStation describes the game as a single-player experience. Push Square reported on June 24, 2026 that there was no word on GTA Online at launch; GTA V’s GTA Online arrived on October 1, 2013, about two weeks after that game.

Do you need a 4K TV for GTA 6?

No. Any TV or monitor with HDMI works. A 4K HDR TV makes the most of a PS5, PS5 Pro or Xbox Series X, and 120 Hz needs an HDMI 2.1 TV, but Rockstar hasn’t published GTA 6’s resolution or frame rates yet.

How this was written: Based on Rockstar Games’ GTA VI page and Newswire preload announcement, PlayStation’s GTA VI page and Store listing, the Xbox Store listing, Sony’s PS5, PS5 Pro, PlayStation Plus and support pages, Microsoft’s Xbox Series X, Series S and Game Pass pages, usable-space figures reported by GameSpot, TechSpot, TechRadar and KitGuru, and reporting by Push Square, Notebookcheck and Video Games Chronicle (June-August 2026), compiled into our own table. We have not played GTA 6 or tested any console; Rockstar’s Newswire is the final word.
