Are you feeling the enshitification?
I remember days of LiveJournal, organic adless YouTube and the like. But now, it's like the whole internet was gamified and merged with physical reality. It became a cybercenter wired directly into our nervous systems.
But now? It's hard to explain, but it's like...everything is restricted. Before, Craigslist and Upwork were free to post. That's the whole point of internet, a free portal for stuff you can't do in "real life". Now they charge just to make a CL post, or get a paid job.
For this new generation, it's no problem. I guess it's just the way the internet is, right? But it really isn't. It shouldn't be so restricted!
And it's like that with everything. Examples are countless. But consequences are real. Collectively, we call this phenomenon Enshitification.
But it seems pointless. If they were really trying to make more money, they would make the services free and accessible. And then monetize the rush. I mean, restricting causes less income, not more. So I always think, are the owners of these platforms dumb? Is that what greed does to the human mind? That you sabotage even your own income, while causing unneeded distress to society.
This is a running theme with a lot of things on the internet. And this is why on Ghost Together we stray from those types of patterns.
One example how we fight enshitification is, by letting users upload their songs and put together an album, with the help of a very simple and intuitive user interface.
It is mind-boggling why things like this are not available anywhere on the "internet" right now. Want to publish songs? Must pay $100 to DistroKid, and who knows where your music will end up and whether it will be promoted or subdued by algorithms for some idealogical reason.

One behavior irony: So data has been saying for years water resources (in US) are drying up. Possible, because community reservoirs are not based on rain but snowmelt. (It would be easy enough to filter rainwater but its at a personal level, not larger). Anyway, no one really cared about the fate of water until it started impacted water and electric bills for data centers because they don't know how to live outside this systematic messed up grid and want their appliances. Social media is dead. But maybe it's not the platforms, it's the people. They are tired, overinteracted with, and so on. So, just building another platform doesn't mean people will suddenly flood in. They will inherit same feelings other social medias trained them for over time.
This is why ghost together platform is not a replacement, or an imporvement. Even though it has more human features right now than any other capitalistically crystallized platform.
The plan isn't to make better social media. It's to add tools that are easy to use, to make something that people actually benefit from in one way or another. This goes beyond user interface. Even though that's fundamental. But glad we got that going for it now.
Our next steps will include creating places like Loom (sell products), Uploading songs and music album creation, a place for writing articles, and eventually if all goes well our own YouTube.
It's the combination of various tools that will direct this platform toward something needed, without surveilance, unnecessary restrictions and ideological shadow banning. Just a simple place to make it easier for humans to do their things.

The song that started it all. I had never made anything like it before, and I knew immediately I wanted to make an album. Made the whole thing in a night, I remember going to bed at 9AM that day because I was up so late. I could easily deploy bots and deceive people into thinking there are more accounts here than there are. Like Twitter does it. But I prefer waiting organically, until there actually are more people – that's human. When you deceive others you deceive yourself. Why engineer sociopathic patterns? That belief, that you are so intelligent you can outsmart masses of people that you are supposed to be helping? That's parasitic. And people who understand this can see it. So you may become praised by fools, no greater than you are, but lose respect from people whose observations and views actually matter.

Like a song follows certain rules and format, social media is a medium that must also follow a format. No ai should ever be used to tamper with timeline. Organic is such an important concept for posts. This makes people feel like the ground isn't shifting under their feet all the time. And allows to draw conclusions based on timestamps, as to when and why something was posted.
