Hello there, thoughtful family-room referee — reading the back of the box before you wrap it is a genuinely kind thing to do, so let’s read it together! GTA 6 is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB, the official US rating, so it’s made for grown-ups and older teens. If you’re buying it as a gift, GTA 6 is on Amazon for PS5 and for Xbox Series X|S, and both PS5 and Xbox let you set an age limit in a few minutes. Below are the plain facts on what’s in the game, what the rating boards said, and the exact menus.

Short answer: GTA 6 is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB, which says M content is generally suitable for ages 17 and up. Its seven content descriptors include Intense Violence, Strong Sexual Content, Nudity and Use of Drugs and Alcohol, plus In-Game Purchases. Europe’s PEGI rating is reported as 18. PS5 and Xbox age limits can block it.

What is GTA 6’s age rating?

GTA 6’s age rating in the United States is M for Mature 17+. The ESRB’s Grand Theft Auto VI listing gives it that rating for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, with Rockstar Games as the publisher, and Rockstar’s own GTA VI page shows the ESRB Mature badge with the same content descriptors. The game comes out on .

The rating opens with this line on the ESRB’s page: Grand Theft Auto VI is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB with Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor and it goes on through the rest of the list below. VICE’s Brent Koepp reported on , that Rockstar Games confirmed the Mature 17+ rating.

What does M for Mature 17+ mean?

M for Mature 17+ is the ESRB’s rating for games meant for players 17 and older. The ESRB’s ratings guide defines it like this:

Content is generally suitable for ages 17 and up. May contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language.

M isn’t the ESRB’s top rating. Above it sits Adults Only 18+ (AO), which the ESRB says may include prolonged scenes of intense violence, graphic sexual content and/or gambling with real currency. GTA 6 is rated M, not AO. One step below M is T for Teen, generally suitable for ages 13 and up.

What are GTA 6’s content descriptors?

GTA 6 carries seven ESRB content descriptors and one interactive element. Here’s each one next to the ESRB’s own definition, so you can see what the label actually means without digging.

GTA 6’s ESRB descriptors and what they mean — compiled by Open World Notes on November 6, 2026, from the ESRB’s GTA VI listing and the ESRB’s ratings guide (definitions quoted)
On GTA 6’s ratingThe ESRB’s definition
Blood and GoreDepictions of blood or the mutilation of body parts
Intense ViolenceGraphic and realistic-looking depictions of physical conflict. May involve extreme and/or realistic blood, gore, weapons and depictions of human injury and death.
Mature HumorDepictions or dialogue involving ‘adult’ humor, including sexual references
NudityGraphic or prolonged depictions of nudity
Strong LanguageExplicit and/or frequent use of profanity
Strong Sexual ContentExplicit and/or frequent depictions of sexual behavior, possibly including nudity
Use of Drugs and AlcoholThe guide defines the two parts separately: The consumption or use of illegal drugs and The consumption of alcoholic beverages
In-Game Purchases (interactive element)Contains in-game offers to purchase digital goods or premiums with real world currency

VICE noted on October 2, 2026, that these descriptors match the ones GTA 5 carries, so if you’ve seen GTA 5’s box, GTA 6’s label will look familiar.

Does GTA 6 have in-game purchases?

The ESRB’s GTA 6 rating flags In-Game Purchases, which the ESRB defines as offers to buy digital goods or premiums with real world currency, from in-game currency to season passes and upgrades. Rockstar hasn’t detailed what GTA 6 will sell inside the game, and the rating doesn’t say either. The simplest fix doesn’t depend on the details: a console spending limit, covered below, stops surprise charges whatever the game offers.

What is GTA 6 rated in Europe, the UK, Germany and Australia?

Outside the US, GTA 6 is reported as an 18 everywhere we looked: PEGI 18 in Europe and the UK, no youth approval (the USK 18 label) in Germany, R18+ in Australia and R18 in New Zealand. Only the US rating can be read on the rating board’s own site today, so the table says where each one comes from.

Two age-rating ladders drawn to scale from age 0 to 18: on the ESRB ladder (E, E10+, T, M 17+, AO 18+) GTA 6 (Grand Theft Auto VI) sits at M for Mature 17+, with Forza Horizon 5 at E, LEGO 2K Drive at E10+ and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 at T; on the PEGI ladder (3, 7, 12, 16, 18) GTA 6 sits at the reported PEGI 18.
Where GTA 6 sits on the ESRB and PEGI age ladders, next to three open-world games rated for younger players. The same points are typed out just below.
  • ESRB ladder (US): E (everyone), E10+, T (13 and up), M (17 and up), AO (18 and up). GTA 6 is M 17+, official. Forza Horizon 5 is E, LEGO 2K Drive is E10+ and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is T.
  • PEGI ladder (Europe and the UK): PEGI 3, 7, 12, 16 and 18. GTA 6 is reported as PEGI 18; the listing was published on October 2, 2026, and then pulled.

In Germany, the label has real effects at the checkout. netzwelt’s Jan Kluczniok reported on , that the USK gave GTA 6 no youth approval, citing graphic violence, frequent drug use and an uncritical portrayal of criminal organizations (our translation), so the game may only be sold to adults. netzwelt adds that Amazon and MediaMarkt charge an extra fee for age-checked delivery and the courier checks ID at the door. In Australia, Twisted Voxel’s Salal Awan reported on , that the Classification Board gave GTA 6 a restricted R18+ for high-impact violence, sex scenes and drug use.

What did the pulled PEGI listing say about GTA 6?

The pulled PEGI listing described GTA 6’s content in more detail than the ESRB does. VGC’s Andy Robinson reported on , that PEGI published an 18 rating for GTA 6 and quickly pulled it. According to VGC, the listing said violence is bloody with a high degree of realism, that some weapons cause detailed decapitation and dismemberment, that drug use is “frequent and prominent,” and that the sexual content includes nudity, scenes of intercourse and occasional scenes of sexual fetishes. VGC didn’t say why the listing came down, and Rockstar hasn’t commented on it, so treat the details as reported, not official.

Why is GTA 6 rated 17 in the US but 18 in Europe?

The ESRB and PEGI simply use different age steps. The ESRB’s step for mature games is 17 (M), with 18 kept for Adults Only, while PEGI’s labels go 3, 7, 12, 16 and 18, so a game with GTA 6’s content lands on PEGI’s top step. PEGI says games with its Drugs descriptor are always rated 16 or 18. Both labels point at the same thing: a game made for adults.

Is GTA 6 OK for a 13-year-old?

By the ESRB’s rating, GTA 6 is made for players 17 and up, and a 13-year-old sits in the T for Teen band, four years below it. The decision is yours, because you know your teen. What the rating gives you is the facts: the seven descriptors in the table above, and the ESRB’s own summary that M games may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language.

If you’re unsure, these three steps make the call easier:

  1. Read the two official labels. The ESRB’s GTA VI listing and Rockstar’s GTA VI page show the same descriptors.
  2. Read what the pulled PEGI listing described in the section above. It’s the most detailed public description of the game’s content so far.
  3. Look at what your console can limit. PS5 and Xbox can block the game by age, then let you approve it later, and can switch off chat and spending on their own.

What about a 15- or 16-year-old?

A 15- or 16-year-old is one or two years under the ESRB’s M 17+ line for GTA 6, and in Europe the reported PEGI 18 puts GTA 6 two or three years out of reach. Some families decide GTA 6 waits; others let an older teen play with chat and spending switched off. Both PS5 and Xbox let you approve one game without lifting the age limit for everything else, which the next two sections walk through.

How do you set an age limit for GTA 6 on PS5?

On PS5, go to Settings, then Family and Parental Controls, then Family Management, pick your child and set Age level for games and apps. PlayStation Support says a child can start a PS5 game if the age rating is the same or lower than the child’s age, so by our reading of that rule, GTA 6’s M 17+ rating in the US opens only at an age level of 17 or higher.

Before you start, PlayStation Support says to create a family, add your child as a family member, and make sure your child has verified their email and signed in on the console. From the same Family Management screen you can also set:

  • Monthly Spending Limit: it starts at zero, and purchases come from the family manager’s wallet.
  • Communication and User-Generated Content: choose Restrict to block text messages and voice chat with other players and the sharing of user-generated content. PlayStation Support says pre-written in-game messages still work.
  • Playtime Settings: set a schedule, or use Change Playtime for Today for a one-off.

You can do all of this from your phone too, in the PS Family app, or on the web through Account Management at playstation.com. The ESRB’s PS5 guide shows the same steps, with an example: at an age level of 11, E and E10+ games open and games rated T for Teen and up will be blocked.

What happens when a child tries to open a blocked game on PS5?

Your child sees a blocked screen and can send you a request. PlayStation Support says the family manager and any appointed parents or guardians get a notification and an email. To answer on the PS5, press the PS button, open Notifications, choose the request and select Go to [Allowed Games]. Allowing GTA 6 there lets your child play GTA 6 without lifting the age level for every other game.

How do you set an age limit for GTA 6 on Xbox?

On Xbox, open the Xbox Family Settings app, pick your child, choose Content Restrictions, turn on Filter Inappropriate Content and select Allow Content Suitable for Age. That’s the order in the ESRB’s Xbox parental-controls guide, which also gives the console route: Settings, then Privacy and online safety, then the family member, then Content restrictions on a number scale.

Little truth every parent of a gamer knows: the controls you set calmly on a Tuesday afternoon are so much easier than the ones you negotiate at 11 pm on launch night.

The ESRB’s example: a console setting of 11 allows E10+ games but not T or M. The guide doesn’t spell out which number opens M games, and suggests “View allowed ratings” on the Microsoft Family website to check. On the same Xbox Family hub page, Xbox lists the ESRB ratings it filters by, from EC to AO.

From the Xbox Family Settings app you can also turn chat and multiplayer down. Under Social, “Manage online communications” lets you choose Everyone, Friends Only or No One, and the Multiplayer settings let you allow or block online play.

How do Xbox purchase requests work?

With Ask a Parent, your child asks and you decide. Xbox’s Family hub page says, With Ask a Parent, you’ll receive an email when your kids want to purchase a game or app, and that children can also request access to content which parents can then approve or decline. For a spending cap, the ESRB’s Xbox guide points to Privacy & online safety, then Xbox Network privacy, then Buy & download on the console, and notes that the account holder gets an email for each Xbox Store purchase. Gift cards or money you add to your child’s account can still be spent, the ESRB adds.

Which PS5 and Xbox settings matter most for GTA 6?

Five settings cover almost everything: an age limit, how requests reach you, a spending limit, chat, and play time. Here they are side by side, with each console maker’s own menu names.

What should you know before buying GTA 6 as a gift for a teen?

Check which console your teen owns, decide on the age setting first, and remember that GTA 6 needs a lot of space. Here’s exactly which consoles play GTA 6, and what’s different between the Standard and Ultimate Editions if you’re choosing one. The download is up to 212 GB, according to Rockstar, so extra PS5 storage can be a handy add-on.

A few things are worth knowing at the checkout:

  • Digital or code in box: either one goes onto the console account you choose, so the age settings on that account are the ones that count.
  • Gift cards: a PlayStation Store gift card or Xbox gift card adds money your teen can spend. On Xbox, the ESRB notes that gift card money can still be spent under a spending limit.
  • In Germany, netzwelt reports the courier checks ID at the door for USK 18 games, so the adult has to be home to sign for it.

What games are like GTA 6 but rated for younger players?

If GTA 6 isn’t the right fit yet, there are big open-world games with lower ESRB ratings. These three are rated E, E10+ and T on the ESRB’s own listings, so the label tells you just as much as it does for GTA 6.

Every one of these lists its rating on the box and on the ESRB’s site, so you can check any other game the same way: search its name on esrb.org and read the descriptors.

Read the label, set the five controls, and whatever you decide, make it your call — you know your player better than any rating board ever will.

Questions and answers

Is GTA 6 rated 18?

In the US, GTA 6 is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB, not 18. Elsewhere it’s reported as an 18: PEGI 18 in Europe and the UK (VGC, October 3, 2026, from a listing PEGI later pulled), the USK 18 label in Germany (netzwelt) and R18+ in Australia (VICE).

Can a 12 year old play GTA 6?

GTA 6 is rated M for Mature 17+, and the ESRB says M content is generally suitable for ages 17 and up, five years above a 12-year-old. It’s a parent’s decision, and PS5 and Xbox age limits can block the game until you approve it.

Is GTA 6 more mature than GTA 5?

On the US label, no difference shows: VICE reported on October 2, 2026, that GTA 6’s ESRB descriptors match GTA 5’s. VICE also noted Australia’s listing names “sex scenes,” where GTA 5’s said sex, but said the wording change alone doesn’t prove more explicit content.

Does GTA 6 have nudity?

Yes. The ESRB lists Nudity and Strong Sexual Content on GTA 6’s rating. The ESRB defines Nudity as graphic or prolonged depictions of nudity, and VGC reported that PEGI’s pulled listing mentioned nudity, scenes of intercourse and occasional scenes of sexual fetishes.

Can you turn off blood or nudity in GTA 6?

We found nothing from Rockstar about content filters inside GTA 6 as of November 6, 2026. PS5 and Xbox parental controls work on the whole game: they block or allow it by age, and separately switch off chat and spending.

How this was written: Based on the ESRB’s Grand Theft Auto VI listing, the ESRB’s ratings guide and its PS5 and Xbox parental-controls guides; Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI page (ESRB Mature badge and descriptors); PEGI’s labels page and our search of PEGI’s database; PlayStation Support’s PS5 parental controls page; Xbox’s Family hub page; and the ESRB listings for Forza Horizon 5, LEGO 2K Drive and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, all checked November 6, 2026. Ratings outside the US are attributed to VGC, netzwelt, VICE and Twisted Voxel by name and date, because the boards’ own pages weren’t readable to us. We have not played GTA 6. The German quote is our own translation. Rockstar’s Newswire is the final word.
