Ooh, the map question — hello there, edge-of-the-map explorer! If you’ve ever driven to the very corner of a GTA map just to see what’s there, this one’s for you. GTA 6’s map is the biggest Rockstar has ever made — about twice the size of GTA 5’s, Rockstar’s developers say — and on launch day you’ll even be able to print it: Rockstar is posting a free map of Leonida to download, which looks great in a simple poster frame. A world that big also means a big download, so an M.2 SSD for PS5 is worth a look if your console is nearly full. Here’s every size figure, who gave it, and how official it is.

Short answer: GTA 6’s map is about twice the size of GTA 5’s and about three times Red Dead Redemption 2’s, Rockstar’s developers say — the biggest map Rockstar has made. Rockstar hasn’t given a number in square miles or kilometers; using fan figures for GTA 5’s land, that works out to roughly 100 km² (39 sq mi).

How big is the GTA 6 map?

The GTA 6 map is about twice as big as GTA 5’s, according to Rockstar developers in three separate 2026 interviews, and Rockstar calls it its largest map ever. Rockstar hasn’t published an exact area for Leonida, the game’s version of Florida, so any figure in square miles or kilometers is an estimate.

Leonida is the whole GTA 6 state: Vice City plus the swamps, keys, small towns and countryside around it. Rockstar’s GTA VI page describes the story as stretching across the state of Leonida, and GTA 6 comes out on , for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

What exactly has Rockstar said about the size of Leonida?

Rockstar’s developers compared Leonida with older games three times in 2026, and every time they landed on about twice GTA 5. Here they are in date order:

  • Rob Nelson, to TGG (August 2026): the YouTuber TGG visited Rockstar North in Edinburgh ahead of the Netflix premiere of Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look and spoke with head of development Rob Nelson. VGC’s Dave Aubrey reported on August 28, 2026 that Nelson shared several size comparisons: the GTA 6 world is twice the size of GTA 5 and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2. TGG summed up the visit: The message that the entire Rockstar team wanted to get across to me is, ‘this game is so big, the world has never seen a game like GTA 6 before’.
  • Aaron Garbut, to Game Informer (September 2026): in Game Informer’s “Welcome to Leonida” feature of , Rockstar North’s Aaron Garbut said Leonida is the biggest map Rockstar has made by some degree — around twice GTA 5’s, as Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson reported the same day.
  • Edge magazine (October 2026): Edge’s GTA VI cover story reported, according to Rockstar, that the GTA 6 map is just about twice the size of GTA 5, Insider Gaming’s Mike Straw wrote on October 29, 2026, and added that Leonida’s landmass is nearly as large as the playable areas of GTA 4, GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 together.

Has Rockstar given GTA 6’s map size in square miles or kilometers?

No. As of , Rockstar hasn’t given the GTA 6 map’s area in square miles or square kilometers — not on the GTA VI page, not on the Rockstar Newswire, and not in the interviews above. Insider Gaming noted that Garbut didn’t go into much detail on the map’s exact square kilometers. Any exact GTA 6 map size you see online is somebody’s estimate.

Is the GTA 6 map bigger than GTA 5’s?

Yes, the GTA 6 map is about twice as big as GTA 5’s, per Rob Nelson, Aaron Garbut and Edge. GTA 5’s map — the city of Los Santos plus the countryside of Blaine County — has been Rockstar’s yardstick for a decade, so “twice GTA 5” is the comparison Rockstar keeps coming back to.

It’s a nice echo of the last launch. Before Grand Theft Auto V came out in 2013, Rockstar said its world would be bigger than Red Dead Redemption, GTA: San Andreas and GTA IV put together, as summed up in GamesRadar+’s headline Grand Theft Auto V larger than GTA IV, San Andreas, Red Dead Redemption together. Now GTA 6 is making the same kind of leap over GTA 5.

How does Vice City compare with Los Santos?

Vice City on its own is about twice the size of Los Santos, Rob Nelson told TGG, according to VGC. Counting Vice City’s surrounding suburbs, Nelson’s comparison grows to about eleven times Los Santos and its surrounding areas. That city-to-city number is a different yardstick from the whole-map “twice GTA 5,” so the two don’t contradict each other: by Nelson’s numbers, Vice City and its suburbs grew far more than the map as a whole.

How does the GTA 6 map compare with Red Dead Redemption 2?

The GTA 6 map is about three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s, Rob Nelson told TGG, as VGC reported on . Red Dead Redemption 2 came out in 2018 and was Rockstar’s most recent open world before GTA 6, which makes it the other natural comparison.

To-scale bar chart of the GTA 6 (GTA VI) map size measured in GTA 5 maps: Leonida is about 2 GTA 5 maps per Rockstar's Rob Nelson, Aaron Garbut and Edge, GTA 5 is 1 map, and Red Dead Redemption 2 works out to about two-thirds of a map from Nelson's "three times RDR 2" ratio, with a box noting Vice City is about twice Los Santos and about eleven times with its suburbs.
GTA 6’s map in GTA 5 maps: Rockstar’s own comparisons drawn to scale. The dashed bar is our arithmetic, and the same numbers are typed out just below.
  • GTA 6, Leonida: about 2 GTA 5 maps (Rob Nelson via TGG and VGC; Aaron Garbut in Game Informer; Edge).
  • GTA 5, Los Santos and Blaine County: 1 map, the yardstick.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2: about 2/3 of a GTA 5 map — our arithmetic from Nelson’s two ratios (2 ÷ 3), not a Rockstar figure.
  • City to city: Vice City is about 2 times Los Santos, and about 11 times Los Santos and its surrounding areas once Vice City’s suburbs are counted (Nelson via VGC).

Why don’t Rockstar’s GTA 6 map comparisons add up exactly?

Rockstar’s GTA 6 map comparisons are rough ratios from interviews, not measurements, and they don’t all fit together neatly. If Leonida is twice GTA 5 and three times Red Dead Redemption 2, then Red Dead Redemption 2 would be about two-thirds the size of GTA 5 — yet Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson wrote that Red Dead Redemption 2’s map is only slightly bigger than GTA 5’s.

The likely reason is that a “map size” can mean land only, land plus water, or everything inside the playable border, and Rockstar hasn’t said which one it used. Our friendly advice: read “twice GTA 5” as a lot bigger, in a way you’ll feel, not as a precise number.

How many square kilometers is the GTA 6 map, by the best estimates?

About 85 to 100 square kilometers of land, by the best estimates we found: 85.6 km² from the main fan mapping project and about 100 km² if you take Rockstar’s “twice GTA 5” at face value. Both rest on fan measurements of GTA 5, whose land area community mapping projects put at just under 50 km², as Notebookcheck’s Marius Müller reported on September 21, 2026. Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson used the same figure: about 75 to 80 km² for GTA 5’s whole map, about 50 km² of it land.

Four squares drawn to scale comparing land area: GTA 5 at about 50 square kilometers (19 square miles), the fan-made GTA 6 map Version 16 at 85.6 km² (33 sq mi), Rockstar's "about twice GTA 5" for GTA VI's Leonida at roughly 100 km² (39 sq mi), and the older fan map Version 15 at about 110 km² (42 sq mi).
How big is Leonida? Land areas drawn to scale — Rockstar’s about twice GTA 5 next to the fan estimates. Every figure is typed out in the table just below.

The pattern in our table: every Rockstar figure says about twice GTA 5, while the fan numbers have swung from 2.7 times down to 1.7 times as better footage came out. The gap between the newest fan map (85.6 km²) and Rockstar’s “twice” (about 100 km²) is about 14 km² — more than a quarter of a whole GTA 5, by our count.

Why do the fan estimates of the GTA 6 map keep changing?

Fan GTA 6 maps are rebuilt from trailers, screenshots and footage, so each new look at Leonida moves the coastlines. Notebookcheck reported that the mapping team revised the scale and shape of Leonida based on newer information, including footage from Rockstar’s Extended Look, which is why Version 16 shrank from nearly 110 km² to 85.6 km² of land.

The fan map’s whole grid is about 21 by 20 km, which sounds like 420 km², but Notebookcheck points out that much of that box is water or outside the reconstructed land. You can browse the community’s versions at GTADB’s interactive map and State of Leonida’s map; both are fan projects, not Rockstar’s.

What places are on the GTA 6 map?

Rockstar’s “Only in Leonida” page names six places on the GTA 6 map: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. Rockstar calls Leonida the sunshine state and Vice City the darkest side of the sunniest place in America.

Confession from a fellow fan: the number we’re most excited about isn’t the square miles — it’s all those interiors. More doors that actually open? Yes please.

Rockstar’s page gives each place its own gallery but doesn’t say how big any of them is. Fan maps add smaller names spotted in trailers, such as Key Lento, Hamlet and Capri, which Notebookcheck lists among the places the Version 16 fan map updated.

Does a bigger map make GTA 6 better?

Not on its own, and Rockstar’s developers talk more about how full the GTA 6 map is than how big it is. In Game Informer, Aaron Garbut put it this way, as Insider Gaming quoted him on :

We obsessed about every part – the rooftops, the alleys, the internals and everything in between to the point we hit a critical mass with the numbers of our interiors, and you start to feel the buildings are more real inside and out. This world is a cohesive whole with the density of content and a hand-crafted quality to every bit.

In Edge, Garbut added: You can go anywhere, any random location, and so many people have thought about that location. PC Gamer’s headline on Rockstar’s size comments said the map holds an order of magnitude more interiors (PC Gamer). Honestly, that’s the part that makes us smile: twice the map is nice, but more doors you can actually open is what you’ll notice on your first drive through Vice City.

Can you see the whole GTA 6 map just by playing the story?

Probably not all of it — the GTA 6 story is meant to show you most of Leonida, not every corner. Rockstar’s Rupert Humphries told Game Informer, as Dexerto’s Connor Bennett reported on September 30, 2026: We don’t have time to take you everywhere, but we want you to be able to explore and get a feel for most the places, cultures, and vibes. So the far corners of the GTA 6 map are yours to find on your own.

Where can you see the official GTA 6 map?

On Rockstar’s official site from launch day: Rockstar’s preload announcement on the Newswire says it plans to add a printable GTA 6 cover art poster and a map of Leonida as a free digital download on . That map, plus the game itself, is the first real chance to measure Leonida, and we’ll update this article when trustworthy measurements appear.

If you’d like a printed copy, the Vice City Collection box at the Rockstar Store includes a double-sided souvenir poster with a map of Leonida — here’s what’s in the Vice City Collection and each GTA 6 edition. For a home print of the free map, a standard poster frame or a magnetic poster hanger keeps it flat on the wall, and our GTA 6 gift ideas have more for the game room.

How much storage does a world this big need?

GTA 6 needs up to 212 GB of free space, per Rockstar’s preload announcement, and a world twice the size of GTA 5’s is a big part of why. Preloading opens on , 9 days before launch, so it’s a good week to check your console.

So pack snacks for the long drives. On November 19, grab Rockstar’s free map, pick a corner of Leonida nobody’s talking about, and go see it for yourself.
