Hello there, soft-sweater superhero! Ugly sweater day is coming, and your kid wants in, but not if it itches. Good news: the spirit of the day is tacky joy, not scratchy wool, and we’ve got plenty of comfy ways to get there. Your child can join ugly sweater day at school without wearing a single itchy stitch. A soft printed holiday T-shirt, a cotton or bamboo-blend sweatshirt, or a plain top with a few festive pin-ons all count, and most teachers are happy to say so. You can browse kids’ Christmas T-shirts on Amazon, or read on for the fabrics, labels and sizes that matter.

Short answer: On ugly sweater day at school, a child who can’t stand itchy sweaters can wear a soft printed holiday tee or sweatshirt, a cotton or bamboo-blend sweater with a flat or printed label, or a plain shirt with removable decorations. Skip bells and light-up battery packs, and send the teacher a note saying it counts.

What can a child wear on ugly sweater day if itchy sweaters are a no?

A child who hates itchy sweaters can wear any soft festive top on ugly sweater day: what matters is the holiday spirit, not the knit. Here are five options, from the softest to the most sweater-like:

  1. A printed holiday T-shirt. The design is printed into the fabric, so there’s no scratchy backing inside. Little Sleepies’ Rudolph’s Snowy Adventure Relaxed Pocket Tee is tagless, and Primary’s kids long sleeve holiday treats tee is 100% cotton slub. Amazon has plenty of tagless kids’ Christmas shirts too.
  2. A soft holiday sweatshirt. Warmer than a tee and still smooth inside. Little Sleepies’ Rockin’ Santa Crewneck Sweatshirt has a French terry inside and a flat sewn-in label the store calls sensory friendly.
  3. A plain top your child already loves, decorated. Felt shapes stuck on the outside only, so nothing new touches the skin (the DIY steps are below).
  4. A cotton or bamboo-blend sweater. Primary’s kids snowflake fair isle sweater is 100% cotton, pre-washed, and Little Sleepies’ Rudolph Sweater is 60% viscose from bamboo and 40% cotton.
  5. A festive extra instead of a top. A Christmas headband, a Santa hat or seamless Christmas socks, for kids who’d rather not change their clothes at all.

Target’s house brand, Cat & Jack, also sells sensory-friendly basics: when the line launched, Disability Scoop reported in August 2017 that Target was marketing tees and leggings with flat seams and no tags or embellishments, to minimize discomfort when in contact with the skin. A plain Cat & Jack top makes a good base for pin-on decorations.

Why do ugly Christmas sweaters feel itchy to some kids?

Ugly Christmas sweaters often feel itchy to sensory-sensitive kids because of the sewn-in tag, the seams, the knit itself and the backs of all those decorations, not just the yarn. Pediatric occupational therapist Courtney English explains it in a Little Sleepies interview from April 4, 2025: children with typical touch habituation notice their clothes for 5-10 minutes and then stop being aware of them, while kids with sensory sensitivities may remain acutely aware of their clothing throughout the day. For a school day, that’s six or seven hours of noticing. Her advice for picking clothes:

Parents should look for brands that use printed labels instead of sewn-in tags and opt for flat seams. Avoid extra materials that differ in texture from the clothing itself, as these inconsistencies can be triggering.

Ugly sweaters are basically a pile of “extra materials”: appliqués, sequins, tinsel, pom-poms and bells. That’s the fun for most kids, and exactly the problem for some.

Itch map of a red kids' ugly Christmas sweater with a felt tree, bells and a light-up battery pack, marking seven spots that can bother sensitive skin - the sewn-in neck tag, the knit fabric, tight rib cuffs, side and shoulder seams, the scratchy back of appliqués and sequins, jingling bells and pom-poms, and the LED battery pack - each with a softer swap.
Our itch map: seven spots on a kids’ holiday sweater that can bother sensitive skin, and a swap for each. Every spot is written out below.
  1. Sewn-in neck tag: swap for a printed or flat label, or a tagless top.
  2. The knit fabric: swap a stiff acrylic knit for cotton or a bamboo-cotton blend.
  3. Tight rib cuffs and waistband: pick relaxed cuffs, or let your child push the sleeves up.
  4. Side and shoulder seams: look for flat seams, or wear a soft tee underneath.
  5. The back of appliqués and sequins: pick a printed design, or add a liner tee.
  6. Bells, pom-poms and tassels: use pin-on extras that come off at recess.
  7. A light-up battery pack: skip the lights, or check that the pack is closed (see the safety section).

Which fabrics are softest for a kids’ holiday sweater?

The softest kids’ holiday tops in the listings we read are cotton and bamboo-viscose blends, and the store pages that mention sensory comfort are all at Little Sleepies. Little Sleepies’ play tops are 70% viscose from bamboo, 25% cotton and 5% spandex, and its knit sweaters are 60% bamboo viscose and 40% cotton. Primary’s kids’ holiday knits and tees are 100% cotton, pre-washed to cut down shrinking. A classic ugly sweater is usually acrylic: Tipsy Elves’ Toddler Boy’s Green Christmas Lights Sweater lists 100% acrylic, the only fabric named in the 47 kids’ listings we read there. Every child is different, though, so let the try-on decide.

How do kids’ holiday tops compare on fabric, labels and care?

Kids’ holiday tops differ most on two things a sensory-sensitive child notices: the label at the neck and what’s stuck to the front. Here’s what each store’s own listing says, side by side:

The no-itch table: kids’ holiday tops compared, compiled by Ugly Sweater Party on November 8, 2026, from the product listings and size charts of Tipsy Elves, Little Sleepies, Primary and UglyChristmasSweater.com. “Not stated” means the listing doesn’t say. Two things stood out. First, none of the ugly sweater listings we read says anything about seams, so ask the store or check inside the sweater when it arrives. Second, a “sewn-in” label isn’t always a scratchy one: Little Sleepies calls its flat sewn-in labels sensory friendly, while a stiff loop tag can still be cut out (cut close, and check that no hard stub is left behind).

Does Tipsy Elves list the fabric for its kids’ ugly sweaters?

Mostly no: on November 8, 2026, only 1 of the 47 listings in Tipsy Elves’ kids’ ugly Christmas sweaters collection named a fabric in its description (100% acrylic), and none listed care steps there. The collection had 33 kids’ listings in XS (5) to XL (12) and 14 toddler listings in 2T to 4T. Eight listings carried a “no-itch tag” feature in the store’s product data. If fabric matters for your child, ask Tipsy Elves before you order, or pick a store whose listing spells it out.

What size ugly sweater does a kid in size 8 need?

A kid who wears size 8 usually needs a medium in an ugly sweater, but each store’s chart is built for slightly different kids, so match your child’s height and weight to the chart. Tipsy Elves labels its kids’ medium “M (8)”, yet its own kids’ sweater chart lists the medium for ages 8-9, 51-54 inches tall, 61-72 pounds and a 27-inch chest. Little Sleepies’ size 8 is for 50-52 inches and 57-65 pounds. Primary sells 8-9 as one size.

Kids’ sweater sizes on two stores’ own charts, compiled by Ugly Sweater Party on November 8, 2026, from the Tipsy Elves kids’ sweater chart and the Play by Little Sleepies size guide. Heights in inches, weights in pounds.

XL (12)12-1357-6085-9629no size; Little Sleepies stops at 10

So a tall 8-year-old can be a Tipsy Elves large, and a small 9-year-old a Little Sleepies 8. Check Tipsy Elves’ size charts, the Little Sleepies sizing guide and the chart on each Primary product page before you order. For kids who hate tight cuffs, sizing up one step gives a looser fit. Older kids who’ve outgrown a 10 or a 12 can wear an adult XS or S; our ugly sweater size guide shows how adult chest sizes run.

What about a toddler ugly Christmas sweater?

Toddler ugly Christmas sweaters come in 2T to 4T at Tipsy Elves, where 14 toddler listings were up on November 8, 2026, and its toddler chart runs from 2T (33-36.5 inches, 29-31 pounds) to 5T (41.5-44 inches, 37.5-42 pounds). For a toddler who pulls at scratchy clothes, a soft toddler Christmas sweatshirt is often the happier choice, and Little Sleepies’ play tops start at 6-12 months. Keep every decoration on a toddler’s top sewn or glued on firmly: little ones put things in their mouths.

How do you make a no-itch DIY ugly sweater for school?

To make a no-itch DIY ugly sweater, start with a soft top your child already wears happily and add the decorations to the outside only, so nothing new touches the skin. That’s the trick: the comfort comes from the shirt they love, and the ugly comes from the front.

Honestly, we love that a felt snowman glued to a favorite sweatshirt counts just as much as a store-bought sweater. Some of the best ugly sweaters are the ones a kid helped make at the kitchen table.

  1. Pick the base. A favorite sweatshirt, a long-sleeve tee or a plain red or green kids’ sweatshirt. Put it on your child first: if it bugs them now, decorating won’t help.
  2. Cut the shapes from felt. Craft felt sheets are soft, don’t fray and come in holiday colors. Big simple shapes work best: a tree, a snowman, a giant ornament.
  3. Glue them on, outside only. Fabric glue keeps the inside smooth; an adult can iron on Christmas iron-on patches before the top is worn. Avoid safety pins for little kids.
  4. Keep the noisy bits optional. Bells and pom-poms can go on a removable felt badge, so your child can take them off when the classroom gets loud.
  5. Test it. Turn the top inside out: if you can feel glue lumps or stitches through the fabric, add a soft tee underneath.

If you’d rather start from a kit, the DIY Ugly Christmas Sweater Kit at UglyChristmasSweater.com pairs a plain 100% cotton red sweater (Youth XS to L) with fabric glue, a stencil sheet, 5 felt sheets, 19 pipe cleaners, 32 pom-poms, 8 googly eyes, buttons, glitter glue and gold beads. The googly eyes, buttons and beads are small parts, so glue them very firmly or leave them out for young kids. You’ll find more kids’ DIY ugly sweater kits on Amazon.

What are easy ugly sweater ideas for kindergarten?

Easy ugly sweater ideas for kindergarten use big, flat shapes a five-year-old can help glue on. A few that work well on a soft sweatshirt:

  • A snowman made from three white felt circles, with a felt carrot nose
  • A big green felt tree with paper-dot “ornaments” drawn in fabric marker
  • A reindeer face with a red felt nose, right in the middle
  • A gingerbread kid with fabric-paint icing
  • A felt gift box with a ribbon bow glued on top

Is there an ugly sweater project for school instead of wearing one?

Yes, many teachers run a paper ugly sweater project, which is a lovely option for a child who’d rather not dress up at all. Arizona PBS’s classroom activity lays it out: define ugly sweaters, set the rules, pass out sweater templates, vote, and display the finished sweaters. A child can design the ugliest sweater in the class without wearing a thread of it. Running a class vote? Our ugly sweater contest guide has a free classroom ballot.

Are light-up ugly sweaters OK for school?

Light-up ugly sweaters can be fine for older kids at school if the battery pack is closed and secure, but they’re a poor pick for young children and for sensory-sensitive kids. Six of the 47 kids’ listings at Tipsy Elves were light-up on November 8, 2026. A battery pack is a hard lump inside the sweater, and flashing lights can be a lot in a busy classroom.

How do you tell the teacher a T-shirt counts as an ugly sweater?

Tell the teacher a T-shirt counts with a short, friendly note before the day: what your child will wear, and that scratchy clothes are hard for them. Most teachers just want every kid to feel included. Our free printable note does the asking for you.

Free printable note to the teacher for ugly sweater day at school, with blanks for the teacher's name, the date and the child's name, checkboxes for a soft holiday T-shirt or sweatshirt, a decorated shirt with pin-ons and no bells, a festive hat or socks, or a sweater with a tee underneath, and a line asking the teacher to count it as their ugly sweater.
Our free printable note for the teacher: print it, fill it in and tuck it in the backpack. The full wording is below.

The note reads: “Dear ___, For ugly sweater day on ___, ___ will join in wearing: a soft holiday T-shirt or sweatshirt / their own decorated shirt (pin-ons, no bells) / a festive hat, socks or headband instead / a sweater, with a tee underneath / something else. Scratchy, tight or noisy clothes are hard for them, so please count this as their ugly sweater. If it gets to be too much, they may take a layer off. Thank you!”

If your child has an IEP or a 504 plan, the teacher may already know about sensory needs, and a note is still a nice heads-up. Teachers and room parents planning the day can say in the announcement that any festive top counts, which takes the pressure off every family, not just one.

When is ugly sweater day at school in 2026?

National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day is Friday, December 18, 2026, according to National Today, but each school picks its own ugly sweater day, often in the last week before winter break, so check the school newsletter. Order early if you’re buying: on November 8, 2026, Little Sleepies’ Rudolph Sweater was down to sizes 7 and 8, and its Rudolph crewneck sweatshirt to size 10 only, while the Rockin’ Santa crewneck had all 11 sizes. Hanukkah 2026 begins at sundown on Friday, December 4, and our ugly Hanukkah sweater guide covers kids’ sizes and ship-by dates. Throwing a party at home too? Now go find that cozy shirt, soft-sweater superhero. Print the note, glue on the snowman, and let your kid have the happiest, itch-free ugly sweater day in the whole school.
